Abortion and the Bible

MY BODY, MY CHOICE.

  • "I own my body. No man or government can tell me what to do with my body, or choose what I do with my body. It's my body and my choice what I do with my body-- and mine alone."
BIBLE'S GUIDELINES:
  • Proverbs 14:12: Some ways that seem right to man end in death (opposite of the Lord's way of life).
  • Psalm 24:1: The earth and all those who dwell in it are the Lord's.
  • Psalm 100:3: Know that God has made us, and not we ourselves.
  • Romans 12:1: We should offer our bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, as a spiritual act of worship.
  • 1 Corinthians 3:16-17: Each person is God's temple, and God's Spirit lives in him or her. God's temple (a person's body) is sacred. If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him or her.
  • 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: Each person's body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives within it. No person is his or her own, but each person has been bought at a price (the sacrifice of Jesus Christ). Therefore, each person should honor God with his or her body.

IT'S NOT A BABY; IT'S JUST TISSUE:
  • "The product growing in my womb is just cells or a blob of tissue, not a baby. I can have an abortion, since I'm not destroying a human being."
BIBLE'S GUIDELINES:
  • Genesis 1:26-28; 2:7: Mankind is created by God in His image, even carrying His eternal breath of life
  • Exodus 21:22-23: The penalty under the law of Moses was to put to death a person who caused even the accidental death of an unborn baby (as by two men fighting).
  • Psalm 139:13-16: Each person is created by God, fearfully, marvelously, and wonderfully, and that person's future is seen by the very eyes of God.
  • Isaiah 42:5 and Acts 17:25: The life and breath of people come from God.
  • Jeremiah 1:4-5: God called Jeremiah to be a prophet, even before his conception.
  • Isaiah 49:1, 5: God called Isaiah to be a prophet, even before his birth.
  • Genesis 25:22-23: God ordained a nation from Jacob (Jews) and a nation from Esau (Edomites, Arabs), while the twins were still in Rebekah's womb.
  • Matthew 1:18, 22-23: God ordained that the Messiah, Jesus, would come from the womb of Mary, even before she conceived.
  • Luke 1:36: God ordained that John the Baptizer would be conceived in the womb of Elizabeth.
______________________________________________________________
THE PREGNANCY RESULTED FROM RAPE OR INCEST:
  • "My pregnancy resulted from rape or incest. God surely must make an exception and permit abortion, when the pregnancy results from such a sad situation."
BIBLE'S GUIDELINES:
  • Ezekiel 18:20: The soul (person) who sins shall alone die for his sins. If the father sins, only he shall be punished for his sin; the son shall not be punished.
  • Genesis 50:20: God can use for good that which is meant for evil.
_____________________________________________________________
A RIGHT TO CHOOSE DEATH:
  • "As this baby's mother, I have the right to choose to have him or her aborted (even though it kills the baby)."
BIBLE'S GUIDELINES:
  • Exodus 20:13: "You shall not murder." (one of the Ten Commandments)
  • Exodus 23:7: Do not put an innocent person to death, because God will not acquit the guilty.
  • Psalm 31:15: A person's time (life span) is in God's hands.
  • Proverbs 6:16-17: There are seven things God hates, one of which is hands that shed innocent blood.
  • Job 12:10: In God's hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.
  • Psalm 8:4-5: God is mindful of man. He has created him only a little lower than the angels and has crowned him with glory and honor.
  • Psalm 71:18: God's power extends to everyone who is to come (future generations).

Some quotes from some of the above sites:

God is Pro-life

In Deuteronomy 30:19, God says, "I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live..."

God hates hands that shed innocent blood. Proverbs 6:16-19. Who is more innocent than an unborn child?

The entire Bible is a book of life, about life, how to protect life, how to treat other people (who are alive). Jesus said, "God is not the God of the dead, but of the living." Matthew 22:32

Ripping Open a Woman With Child

The Old Testament specifically mentions the act of abortion, or "ripping open a woman with child," only 4 times that I know of, in every case condemning it. 2 Kings 8:12 calls abortion evil, and Amos 1:13 says God will punish those who perform abortions. Amos 1:13 doesn't even list the other wrongs that were done, only abortion. By itself, it is enough to anger God to wrath.

2 Kings 15:16 and Hosea 13:16 speak of more abortions during acts of war. Now, you are thinking these were acts of war, forced abortion, these women did not choose abortion. True, but the condemnation in these passages is on the abortionists, not on the women.

In Amos 1:13, the reason given for the killings was "that they might enlarge their territory." Isn't that exactly what the abortion doctor does? He makes money "ripping open the women with children," so he can buy things, material wealth, a big house and property. The abortionist kills for money, the same as an assassin, a hired gun! He makes his living off of other people's suffering!

The Old Testament is replete with warnings against the slaughtering of children:

"There are six things that Yahweh hates, seven that he abhors: a haughty look, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood..."

If these are valid before birth, why not after birth too?
  • baby conceived outside of wedlock
  • parents incapable of caring for baby
  • baby will have inferior quality of life
  • fetus not able to survive outside body of mother by itself

HOW SHOULD WE TREAT AN UNBORN CHILD?
  • Stewardship: Train, and Protect a Child
  • God Says to Love Our Children
  • Respect for Life: Do Not Kill an Innocent Child
Conclusion
Abortion is wrong, therefore, because it is a failure to love, appreciate, and care for a human baby. It is also wrong because it constitutes the deliberate killing of an innocent human being. When people defend abortion, their arguments should always be evaluated in light of the fact that the unborn baby is a human being, a separate individual from its mother. Therefore, deliberately killing it would be just as wrong as killing any other innocent human being. What should a woman do if she has aborted a baby and now realizes she did wrong? She does not need to spend the rest of her life with the burden of unforgiven guilt. The Bible says abortion is wrong, but it also offers a source of true forgiveness through the blood of Jesus Christ. God will forgive if we will come to Him according to His conditions. Read and obey these passages: Rom. 1:16; 6:3,4; 10:9,10; Mark 16:16; Acts 17:30; 2:38; 22:16.

"If a fetus isn't a human being, then what kind of being is it? If it is growing, it must be alive. If it is not alive, then why does it have to be killed? Fetus is the Latin word for infant. The child is called an infant both inside and outside the womb. Note that when a woman was pregnant in the Bible, she was said to be "with child." Therefore, the only distinction between the word child in the womb or outside is the word "with." Luke 2:5"

The angelGabrieltold Mary that she would be "with child and give birth to a son" (Luke 1:31). In the first century, and in every century, to be pregnant is to be with child, not with that which might become a child. The Scriptures teach the psychosomatic unity of the whole person, body, soul, and spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:23). Wherever there is a genetically distinct living human being, there is a living soul and spirit.

PEOPLE ARE THE CHILDREN OF GOD
—EVEN BEFORE BIRTH

"My substance was not hidden from Thee, when I was made in secret, and intricately wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unformed; and in Thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. "—Psalm 739: 15-16.

The Bible teaches that the unborn child has a definite personality. It is a human being:
Jesus was conceived in His mother's womb. He was there—a distinct personage—before birth as well as at birth:

"When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost . . But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, . . fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call His name Jesus: for He shall save His people from their sins."—Matthew 1:18, 20-21. [It was the person of Jesus, not a blob of growing cells that was in Mary. And He who was fully God was made in human form fully as we are made within our own mothers' wombs: "For verily He took not on Him the nature of angels; but He took on Him the seed of Abraham. Wherefore in all things it behooved Him to be made like unto His brethren."—Hebrews 2:16-17.]

"Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call His name Emmanuel."—Matthew 1:23.

"When the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law."—Galatians 4:4-5.

"The Son of Man came to give His life a ransom for many."—Matthew 20:28.

"God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.."—John 3:16.

Scripture indicates that John the Baptist was a distinct person within his mother's womb:

"And Mary arose in those days [while pregnant with Jesus], and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah. And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth [the mother of John the Baptist. John was conceived six months before Jesus.] And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou . . and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed is she that believed."—Luke 1:39-45. [The living personhood of the embryo and fetus is indicated in these passages of Scripture.]

"...and Rebekah his [Isaac's] wife conceived. And the children struggled together within her..." (Genesis 25:21-22).

Note that Rebekah's unborn twins, Jacob and Esau, are referred to as "children" (the Hebrew word used, banim, plural of ben), commonly refers to children after birth, and often has a more specific meaning "sons."

The New Testament uses the usual Greek word for baby, brephos, to refer to the unborn John the Baptist, who "leaped in her [Elizabeth's] womb" because of the presence of the unborn Christ (Luke 1:41-44).

Unborn babies are not disposable clumps of tissue, despite the claims of many pro-abortionists. And they are always human right from fertilization, because all the DNA coding needed to build each individual's physical features is there in the fertilized egg.

The Bible, supported by science, teaches that the unborn baby is a human child (see also Psalm 139:13-16, Jeremiah 1:5).

GOD KNOWS AND LOVES US BEFORE WE ARE BORN!
The Holy Bible teaches that our Heavenly Father knows and loves each person before birth, and that He has a plan for each person's life. Of the many Scriptures addressing this issue which could be quoted, I include the following sample for you to consider:

Psalm 139:13-16: (13) For you created me in my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. (14) I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (15) My frame was not hidden from you when I was in that secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, (16) your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jeremiah 1:4-5a: (4) The word of the LORD came to me saying, (5) "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart...."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Isaiah 49:1b, 5a: (1) ... Before I was born the LORD called me.... (5) And now the LORD says-- he who formed me to be his servant....

__________________________________________________________________

EACH PERSON IS IMPORTANT TO GOD, AND HE HAS PLANS FOR THAT PERSON'S LIFE-- EVEN BEFORE BIRTH:

God ordained two nations to arise from the twins being carried in Rebekah's womb. That is, He had plans for each twin, even before birth:

Genesis 25:22-23a: (22) The babies jostled each within her, and she said, "Why is this happening to me?" So she went to inquire of the LORD. (23) The LORD said to her, "Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated...."

Paul used this same pregnancy to teach that God has plans for us, even before we are born:

Romans 9:11: Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad--... [Rebekah] was told, "The older will serve the younger."

The births of John the Baptist (to Elizabeth) and Jesus the Christ (to Mary) prove that personal identities and God's plans extend to unborn children:

Matthew 1:18b, 22-23: (18) ... but before they [Joseph and Mary] came together, she was found to be with child [Jesus] through the Holy Spirit.... (22) All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: (23) "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him 'Immanuel'-- which means, 'God with us.'"
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luke 1:36: [The angel answered to Mary] "Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luke 1:44: "As soon as your [Mary's] greetings reached my [Elizabeth's] ears, the baby [John] in my womb leaped for joy."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Luke 2:21: On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise him, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.

IMPORTANT BIBLICAL TRUTH: In reading the preceding passages about Jesus and John, notice how they are regarded by God Himself:
1. God sent an angel to Mary to tell her that Jesus in her womb was an UNBORN CHILD;
2. The angel of the Lord spoke of John as the CHILD in Elizabeth's womb; and
3. God did not confuse Jesus and John as being "choices," irrelevant collection of cells that could be aborted at the will of Mary or Elizabeth. God, through His angel, spoke of the UNBORN Jesus and John as CHILDREN.
_________________________________________________________________

CONSIDER THE EVIDENCE. Medical scientists have discovered much about the life of an unborn child, while he or she lives in the mother's womb. For example (dates given as the approximate age of the baby after conception):
  • At 21 days, the baby's heart begins beating, pumping the baby's own blood through his or her circulatory system;
  • At 40 days, the baby's brain begins functioning enough to generate measurable electroencephalographic (EEG) impulses ("brain waves")
  • At 21 days, the baby's arms begin developing, and fingers develop at 6 weeks;
  • The baby begins movement at 7 weeks, which can be felt by the mother at 16 weeks, becoming more active when the mother is awake, and less active when the mother sleeps:
  • The baby's facial muscles move, even forming "smiles," at 11 weeks; and
  • Touching the baby's sole causes him or her to try to move away at 9 weeks.
Thousands of similar observations have been made about the developing baby, but all point to the same conclusion-- a human being is formed at conception. Allowed to develop in the mother's womb, the unborn baby has the potential to become an infant, child, and adult.

LOOK TO GOD FOR UNDERSTANDING. Look to God for your understanding of when life begins-- not to a Supreme Court justice, politician, women's group activist leader, or an abortionist-physician. You will answer to God for your decisions and actions, not to any of these people.

CONCLUSION. The Holy Bible clearly teaches that each person is unique, is known to and loved by God even before birth, and is not placed in his or her mother's womb by chance but by the design of God.

Bible Defines Life:
A. Now where uses phrases "human" or "human being"

1. Uses "man, woman, child, son, daughter, baby etc."
2. Since these terms are used for unborn children, then we have evidence that human life is present before birth
3. The Bible makes no distinction of any kind in the terms used to describe a fetus.
4. Body without spirit is dead: Jas 2:26
5. The blood is the life: Deut 12:23 fetus has bloodstream at 4 weeks

B. "Begat sons and daughters" Gen 5:3,4,28-30
  • Begat always refers to conception and fertilization
C. "children & sons in womb" Gen 25:21-22; 2 Ki 19:3; Ruth 1:11

D. "a man child conceived" Job 3:3
  • notice the difference: day of birth, night conceived see Rev 12:5 "man child born"
E. "mother" of unborn child Num 12:12; Lk 1:43

F. Rom 9:11 for though the twins were not yet born, and had not done anything good or bad

G. "baby leapt for joy" in mother's womb Lk 1:41,44
  • conceived a "son" Lk 1:36; Acts 7:29
Lk 1:36 Elizabeth conceived a son
Lk 1:57 Elizabeth brought forth a son

H. death of unborn= life for life Ex 21:22-25

1. There is no indication in the Hebrew that the baby was miscarried
2. Even if miscarriage is what is meant, the intent was not to abort baby but harm woman,
3. Literal translation: "Child brought forth"
4. Notice that the fetus is referred to as a "child" second most common word for child in OT cf: of Moses in Ex 2:3-10

"Modern Molech Worship

One of the abominations ancient Israel sometimes copied from their heathen neighbors was the practice of molechism. From what I have been able to gather, it was a large idol, half-man and half-bull, with a hollow abdomen. Under the enlarged genitals of the bull part of the image, a fire burned until the hollow abdomen glowed with heat.

The ancient idolaters danced and performed various types of sexual activity with several partners in front of this false god. The revelling continued until a small child, a son or daughter of one of the orgy participants, was thrown alive into the red hot abdominal cavity. The child was seared to death--its shrieks and cries only inciting greater mass hysteria. The burnt remains were removed from the other side of Molech the following day, after the idol had cooled.

As shocking as it may sound, God's ancient people, Israel, who had experienced the one and true God through His covenant with the Patriarchs, sometimes backslid into Molech worship! Such a base form of iolatry may be partially understood in the ignorant heathen unto whom the Living God was not revealed. What is difficult to comprehend is how a people who had seen the wondrous acts of Yahweh could be so greatly deceived! In either case, the conscience was seared because basic morality teaches man to care for his young.

Israel was further without excuse because God Himself warned them specifically through His servant Moses before they entered Canaan:

...Deut. 18:10,12 There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, ... [12] For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee.

When the psalmist was recounting these sad lapses in Israel's istory, he plainly said the sacrificing of children was demon worship. The children who were thus killed were innocent, and the blood-polluted land cried out for God's judgment. As a result, Israel found themselves in shame and impoversihment, taken over by their enemies. Note carefully this passage and see if you can find a modern parallel in our "civilized" nation.

...Psalm 106:37-41 Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, [38] And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood. [39] Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions. [40] Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance. [41] And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them.

The observance of Molech worship was an idolatrous practice which brought swift and terrible judgment on Israil. As already stated, the Molech idolaters performed various types of sexual activity in front of their false god as a prelude to sacrificing their innocent children. IN PRINCIPLE OUR NATION IS DOING EXACTLY THE SAME THING! Unrestrained sex in the name of "liberation" has resulted in a large proportion of the unwanted aborted pregnancies. An updated version of Molech worship is alive in our present day as millions engage in unbridled promiscuity. The children so conceived are killed in the abdomens of modern idolaters as they throw their children on the fire plate of Molech in worship to the God of sex! Molech worship is indeed alive today across our land, as this word from Ezekiel clearly shows:

...Ezekiel 23:36-37 The Lord said moreover unto me; Son of man, wilt thou judge Aholah and Aholibah? yea, declare unto them their abominations; [37] That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them.

...Ezekiel 23:46 For thus saith the Lord God; I will bring up a company upon them, and will give them to be removed and spoiled.

If America falls and ceases as a nation, I am persuaded of the Lord that it will be due to moral rather than military weakness. The erosion of America's founding values will result in barrenness and desolation. America's only hpe is a deep and sincere repentance. Otherwise our great land, for whom I weep, will not be healed. Judgment is coming! There are many parallesls between ancient Israel and modern America.

...2 Chron. 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

...2 Chron. 7:19-22 But if ye turn away, and forsake my statutes and my commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them; [20] Then will I pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have sanctified for my name, will I cast out of my sight, and will make it to be a proverb and a byword among all nations. [21] And this house, which is high, shall be an astonishment to every one that passeth by it; so that he shall say, Why hath the Lord done thus unto this land, and unto this house? [22] And it shall be answered, Because they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshipped them, and served them: therefore hath he brought all this evil upon them.

Wake up, America! Your gods have decieved you and are leading you down the road to unrelenting judgment from the hand of Almighty God who established this great nation for our fathers who trusted Him.

One of the greates abominations of these United States is the multitudeness slaughter of the unborn. Our society condones and even encourages the offering of the fruit of our bodies because of the sin in our souls (see Micah 6:7). God is not mocked: whatever a man or a nation sows will ultimately be reaped (see Galatians 6:7-8). All the nations who forget God will be judged more severely than those who have never known Him (See Psalm 9:16-17; Luke 12:47-48).

Listen, America, to the eternal Word of God:

...Leviticus 18:21 And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord. "*
